Celebrating a year of Moved to Action
Today we commemorate the first anniversary of the Moved to Action report. After a successful launch last year, the program is growing in reach, and in its capacity to support museums across Canada and affirm the diverse experiences of Indigenous people and communities.
The Reconciliation update in the Fall 2023 issue of Muse outlines the reach the report has had in its first year. Nearly 10,000 readers have downloaded the report and around 3,000 have accessed our toolkits. We have presented at conferences, including making it the focus of our own 2023 conference, and hosted fourteen presentations and webinars. As part of CMA’s Hill Day in the Spring, we met with government officials to discuss support for repatriation and other Moved to Action recommendations.
To measure the uptake and engagement with the Moved to Action report, we conducted a short survey. Thank you to all of you who took the time to participate. We learned that the repatriation and engagement sections are the areas with which readers have engaged most. We heard that respondents are using the report as guidance for institutional planning. We also heard that you continuing to engage with our Moved to Action toolkit resources.
In this recent statement from CMA Executive Director, Janis Kahentóktha Monture, some additional reflection on the meaning of this work, and on what lies ahead for the CMA in relation to it.
In October, the CMA will be launching a National Repatriation Study to measure the scale and scope of repatriations taking place between institutions and Indigenous rights holders. We will also be hosting a meeting with members of the Reconciliation Council, planning the future vision for the program, and for the CMA as is endeavours to become a more accountable and supportive organization.
