Canadian Museums Association Announces New Interim CEO

The Canadian Museums Association (CMA) has turned to an experienced association executive with a reputation for getting things done to lead it while it begins the search for a permanent replacement for departing chief executive Dr. Vanda Vitali.

Ottawa public affairs and management consultant Massimo Bergamini has been named interim chief executive officer of the CMA. He will provide staff leadership to the museum association until the end of the year and assist the Board in the search for a permanent CEO.

“Massimo will bring integrity, a keen understanding of association management and governance, as well as an impressive track record of advocacy success to his role as interim chief executive,” said CMA President Michael Wallace. “His advocacy experience and knowledge of the workings of government will be instrumental in ensuring the community is well prepared to take advantage of the national museum policy consultations slated for the fall.”

“I want to thank the board for its confidence and for the opportunity to provide staff leadership to the organization at a time of transition and great opportunity,” said Bergamini. “Our society is at an inflection point — museums can help it navigate through this period of change and uncertainty. My goal is to help the CMA and the museum community play that role.”

Before founding his management and public affairs consulting practice in 2019, Bergamini was President and CEO of the National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC) where he helped guide the organization through a period of policy and regulatory turbulence. Prior to joining NACC, Bergamini was Executive Director of Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) where he led modernization of the organization’s accreditation and animal welfare policies and programs and helped position it as a leading voice for conservation.
