Canadian Museums Association Announces Executive Director Search

CMA president Heather George, today announced that the CMA Board will launch a national search for the CMA’s permanent Executive Director this September.

“When the new Board was elected last year, it committed to conducting a national search for CMA’s new Executive Director. Today, I’m pleased to announce that we are delivering on this Board priority,” said George. “A hiring committee has been struck, executive search firms are being interviewed and we expect to launch this process by mid-September.”

Originally hired for a six-month transition term, current Executive Director Massimo Bergamini was asked by the Board last fall to extend his stewardship of the organization for another year to help CMA bolster its foundations. Bergamini informed the Board last month that he will not be putting his name forward for the role.

“Given the critically important work we face in the next few months – launch of consultations on a new national museums policy, ushering in a new hybrid workplace, planning for CMA’s 2023 Conference – and to ensure that the process is viewed as transparent and fair, I could not in good conscience put my name forward,” said Bergamini.

“Massimo’s time with the CMA has been impactful and led to significant although not always visible changes at the organization and in the sector,” said George. “From decommission and moving to a new modern office space, to bringing the organization into a new era of financial management; to supporting the safe relocation of refugees from Afghanistan; to supporting the board in championing new museum policy; he has, even in a short time, accomplished years’ worth of work”.

“What we have appreciated most about working with Massimo is that he brought a real humanity to the CMA, showing genuine care and concern both for CMA employees and the sector. It is with the greatest respect and gratitude that we thank Massimo for setting the CMA back on course and being a constant champion for our sector.”
