Become a CMA Director

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Canadian Museums Association (CMA) is seeking qualified candidates to fill up to six (6) vacancies on its Board of Directors and is launching an open call for expressions of interest from the entire CMA membership. The CMA is committed to ensuring that its Board is inclusive and reflects the diversity of its membership and community in all its forms.

The Nominating and Governance Committee will be meeting in early May to recommend a slate of Directors for election at the 2024 CMA AGM, anticipated June 19, 2024.

Serving as a member of the Board at this pivotal moment in the CMA’s history will provide an unparalleled opportunity to contribute to the continued evolution of an organization that has been the voice of Canada’s museum and heritage communities for more than 70 years.

THE ROLE

As a Board Director, you will provide fiduciary oversight, strategic direction, and act as a champion and advocate for the CMA and its mission.

As the ideal candidate, you will bring experience in governance, finance, human resources and organizational development as well as a lived understanding of the diverse nature of Canada’s museum sector and the challenges and opportunities it faces.

Most importantly, as a key member of a team of dedicated Board volunteers and professional staff committed to modernizing the CMA’s value proposition, you will bring your creativity, innovative ideas and passion for museums and heritage institutions to help drive positive change.

The CMA is strongly committed to removing barriers in hiring and board selection processes for historically marginalized people, including those who self-identify as belonging to the diverse Indigenous communities or who self-identify as Black, Racialized, persons with disabilities, LGBTQ2S+ persons, people with lived and living experience of mental health problems and illnesses, women or those belonging to the many equity-deserving communities.

ELIGIBILITY

All Regular Individual Members (including students, retired members and Fellows) and designated representatives of Institutional Members in good standing are eligible for nomination to the Board of Directors.

COMPENSATION

The Board role is an unpaid, volunteer position. However, expenses incurred as a member of the Board (e.g., travel to Board meetings) will be reimbursed by the CMA.

THE PROCESS

If the opportunity to serve on the Board of Directors of the CMA intrigues you, please send a brief letter outlining your interest along with a copy of your resume to Heather George, Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee at governance@museums.ca.

Expressions of interest must be received no later than Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
