A Maritime Coastal Experience

Get ready for an action-packed day! We’ll board the bus for a 35-minute drive to the fishing village of Steveston. Our first stop takes us to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site. The historic cannery building was built in 1894, on wood pilings on top of the Fraser River, and is a well-preserved reminder of days past when up to 15 canneries lined the Steveston waterfront. Next stop — the Britannia Shipyards. An authentic representation of a once thriving community of canneries, boat yards, residences and stores. We’ll tour the oldest shipyard buildings in British Columbia, and observe ongoing boat restoration projects as you experience a bygone time when fishing and boatbuilding were flourishing industries on the Fraser River. A Vancouver Aquarium Oceanwise™ restaurant, we’ll enjoy an early lunch of Halibut and Chips at world famous Dave’s Fish and Chips (the Wharf). Vegetarian options available. Whale watching in BC is an extraordinary experience. In the afternoon, our three-hour whale watching Tour will explore the BC coast in search of Orcas, Humpback Whales, Grey or Minke Whales and more! Finally, it is back on the bus, just in time to get ready for the Reception at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Fee: $195. This is in addition to the registration fee! Open to delegates and guests. Tour includes transportation with a facilitator/interpreter onboard, all guided site visits, presentations, whale watching tour, refreshments and lunch. You will be returned to the Sheraton Wall Centre at approximately 5:00 p.m. Limited to 40 participants.

Inside the Vancouver Art Gallery

  Study tour Photos

The Vancouver Art Gallery’s current location, where it has been situated since 1983, has a storied history as a provincial courthouse—evident in some iconic pieces of architecture that remain from this period—and is built upon an underground series of offices, storage areas and preparation facilities that are affectionately referred to as “the catacombs.” As the Gallery prepares to move locations for the third time in its 87-year history, this study tour presents delegates with a behind-the-scenes tour of the courtrooms and catacombs that give this current location its charm. This tour will be complemented by a presentation that outlines the Gallery’s future home planned for 2021 just blocks away which will feature 310,000 square feet of Galleries, educational spaces, theatre, storage and art preparation areas, designed by internationally renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. Light refreshments will be served.

Fee: FREE! This is in addition to the registration fee! Open to CMA member delegates only. Delegates will make the short walk between the Sheraton Wall Centre and the Vancouver Art Gallery as a group. Delegates are free to return to the hotel on their own. Tour includes presentation(s), behind-the-scenes tour and light refreshments. Limited to 25 participants.

Half Day — 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Take a Walk on Vancouver's Wild Side!

  Study tour Photos

Join us on location for ‘An Arresting Experience!’ The Vancouver Police Museum takes you behind-the-scenes of Vancouver’s local law enforcement, into a history of Vancouver that you’ve never explored before. Walk through the museum and learn about some of Vancouver's most exciting crime cases and unsolved murder mysteries, delving deep into the fascinating history of policing in Vancouver. In every room, you'll find authentic photos, archives or artifacts straight from the source. You also have access to the city's former morgue and autopsy room both of which feature original artifacts. From the museum, we'll step outside. Interpreters will share first-hand police accounts of Vancouver's legendary history of drugs, prohibition, sex and scandal. We'll step through the narrow alleys of Chinatown and the derelict dens of the Downtown Eastside to learn about crooked criminals and devious deeds that plagued the city over a century ago.

Fee: $40. This is in addition to the registration fee! Open to delegates and guests. Tour includes transportation, guided tours and light refreshments. Limited to 30 participants.
