Reconciliation Program — Call for Written Submissions

Call for Written Submissions on Reconciliation & Self-Determination at Work

  • The CMA seeks written submissions on reconciliation and self-determination at work in museums and cultural centres
  • Submissions will inform the recommendations, report, and toolkit under development by the CMA to answer Call to Action #67
  • Visit the Reconciliation page for submission guidelines or read more below

The Canadian Museums Association’s Reconciliation Program is working to answer the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Call to Action #67, which asks for  “the Canadian Museums Association to undertake, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, a national review of museum policies and best practices to determine the level of compliance with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and to make recommendations.” As we move toward the final stages of gathering information, we are simply unable to host engagement sessions with everyone involved in this important work. Nor do we wish to place an additional burden on the Indigenous peoples who inform these spaces.

In our efforts to ensure we hear from everyone who can contribute to this work, we are requesting written submissions on how museum and Indigenous cultural centres are responding to the 2015 TRC Calls to Action by fostering reconciliation or self-determination in these spaces. We encourage museums of all sizes to connect with us to share their knowledge and experience.

What’s in it for you?

The core of this work is listening to Indigenous peoples. The CMA is working closely with its Reconciliation Council and other stakeholders across the country, but we know there is a lot to be learned by the many organizations who are doing this work on the ground. In contributing, you will bring more diversity to the feedback, helping to identify key issues from the ground, and inform the development of the recommendations report and learning tools. In short, by sharing your learnings and knowledge, you can  help strengthen reconciliation and self-determination of Indigenous communities within museums and cultural centres and inform others who may be looking for best practices and models.

Written submissions can be in the form of written reports prepared by your organization on the work you are doing to promote or assist reconciliation or self-determination. They can also be case studies that showcase examples of your efforts in action. Examples of submissions may include, among other things, mandate and vision planning, policy development, building partnerships, educational programming, community outreach, engagement session notes, professional development for staff, strategies for hiring Indigenous staff, and creation of bursaries or training programs for Indigenous students.
