INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY

International Museum Day has been celebrated all over the world since 1977, on or around May 18 each year. Since 1992, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has chosen a relevant theme to help create more comprehensive awareness-raising initiatives. In 1996, for instance, that theme was "Collecting Today for Tomorrow," while 2005 saw "Museums Bridging Cultures." In 2007, ICOM's theme was "Museums and Universal Heritage."
ICOM has also recommended that this annual celebration be held in the spirit of the statement:
"Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples."
International Museum Day provides an opportunity each year for museum professionals to get creative, meet the public, and alert them to the challenges that museums face. Many museums in Canada mark this occasion by offering free admission and special events and exhibitions.
