About John G. McAvity

CMA executive director John G. McAvity was born in Saint John, New Brunswick. He attended the University of New Brunswick and is a Certified Association Executive. On October 19, 2007, John received an honorary doctorate
from the University of New Brunswick, in recognition of his 35-year career in service to Canada’s museum community. Prior to joining the CMA in 1981 as executive director, he was executive director of the Ontario Museums Association, the provincial advisor for New Brunswick museums (and founder of the Association Museums New Brunswick), assistant curator at Kings Landing Historical Settlement in Fredericton, and a researcher with the Canadian Inventory of Historic Buildings.
John is an active member of the International Council of Museums, and currently sits on INTERCOM (the International Museum Management Committee). He is an ex-officio member of Canadian Art Museum Directors Organization, and a former board member of the Association of Cultural Executives, the Canadian Society of Decorative Arts, the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, the Canadian Society of Association Executives, the Ontario Association of Art Galleries, the Association of Cultural Executives, and the Canadian Society of Copyright Consumers. He is an honourary member of the Quaco Historical and Library Society, a life member of the Heritage Canada Foundation
Over his years with the CMA John has been responsible for fostering the growth and development of the association, and the Canadian museum sector. He successfully lobbied for new legislation for the indemnification of exhibitions, and the 1991 federal museums policy. He is currently dedicated to a new museums policy with new federal funding.
John has a passion for Canadian art, including the work of his late mother Catherine A. McAvity, and collecting odd antiques such as fire hydrants and hardware.
